in three basic categories: design, test, and support. Included in the design category are systems, software, firmware, hardware, mechanical, and VLSI. The test category encompasses the following: systems integration, application, functional, environmental, and in-circuit testing. Support involves customer sales, customer services, customer training, and solutions services. We learned about their switches and how they operate. A circuit switch allocates a dedicated connector, even when idle, that is optimized for voice traffic. A packet or cell allocates bandwidth only when sending/receiving and is optimized for all services (voice, data, wireless, etc) the protocols associated with packet or cell switching are ATM, IP, and Frame Relay. We also learned about the digital Cross Connect (DCS). There is a filling application which consolidates the partially filled T1 space. The Mux/Demux combines multiple low-speed interfaces into one high-speed interface. A gateway converts between transmission technologies and determines if it is SONNET or NON-SONNET (North American or European signal).

Tellabs product line includes the Titan 53X series. This is a platform for lower rate bandwidth applications, includes a dedicated switch fabric, was released in the 1980's and supports US and European signals. The Titan 5500 was released in the early 1990's and currently supports only North American rates, but will support European in the future. This switch ids for middle-rate bandwidth applications. Finally, their newest Titan 6500 is a platform for higher rate applications and consists of a cell-based (packet) fabric. The Titan 6500 is a multi-transport switch (MTS) used in the following applications: broadband SONNET cross-connect (fiber optic) , OC-48 ring interconnection which enables 32,000 phone calls simultaneously, OC-192 enabling 129,000 phone calls simultaneously, ATM and IP switching, and optical cross-connections. Another product, the AN 2100, converts circuit data (TDM) to packet data (ATM) and enables seamless migration of circuit to packet data while "squeezing" more bandwidth. The Martis DXX is a data services application and is used as a network managing tool. Cablespan is a product

which enables one-way to two-way voice data while making use of unused bandwidth. This is usually in the range from below 50 MHz and above 750 MHz. Cablespan provides voice and data services for TV, Ethernet, and telephone using a hybrid fiber coaxial cable (HFC). It currently deployed in over 30 locations and has a network capacity for over 300,000 lines. Cablespan is run from the provider in the community through the HCF cable to a remote service unit (RSU) which is connected to your home, much like the telephone interface boxes we now have. We also toured their fabrication plant and learned how the products they develop are put together and tested. The circuit boards they use are layered to save space and money. Employees are assigned specific jobs and rotate after a while to let them learn how to work on various parts of a project The discussion panel commented on what they liked most about Tellabs. The responses were varied and included the following. Getting to play with expensive toys, tuition reimbursement/seminars, relaxed atmosphere, activities and sports, invaluable internship experience, sharing open lab time, Continue to page 4 -->
